Placing a Bet on Dubai?s Revival

The chips are in and the stakes are hot. They should be, for in contention is one of the world’s most beloved cities-the emirate of Dubai. Just at the start of this week, Dubai World emerged from a first meeting with its creditors- asking them for a standstill on US billion of its debt for at least six months. In fact the whole affair was conducted under an atmosphere of strict secrecy and security, with attendees asked to be tight lipped about the proceedings. What has emerged is that the Dubai World executives formed a Committee to make a presentation for their case in requesting the moratorium. They were presumably assisted by executives from Deloitte and other auditors. What will happen now is that the request will be considered in the light of the presentation and the recouping of their assets and liabilities, undoubtedly redrawn to show their ability to remain solvent even after the debt has been repaid.

Meanwhile, most of the world already knows that the neighboring emirate of Abu Dhabi has given US billion to Dubai World to help meet its current debt obligations on a US.1 billion Islamic Sukuk bond. What is amazing is that even this has not sent enough positive signals through the region. In the end it just might be required to pay off the debt or part of it in order to stop the negative sentiment that has echoed all through the world.

If that happens, the next question is whether Dubai will recover from its present crisis and will that recovery be for a short or a long term. Analysts are divided on the issue, but it is clear that Dubai’s Government will itself have to do something in this regard, rather than to wait for the interaction of market forces. It is known that market forces are driven by consumer and business sentiment, and when that sentiment remains negative or there is uncertainty about future action, markets are going to see a loss of value. If anything, the Dubai Government could have supported Dubai World in this time of crisis and given a positive signal to the world. By first announcing that it would support the entity and later withdrawing its support, it caused mass confusion and in fact set in motion rumors that the emirate itself was in danger of defaulting due to overextending its plans in the boom period. Nothing could be further from the truth as both Dubai World and the Government of Dubai are well equipped to deal with any financial emergency.

That said, in the short term the Government could assist businesses in getting credit to complete the outstanding projects. The present credit crunch means that new projects are facing financing difficulties in getting their projects off the ground. Everyone in the construction industry knows that there is a considerable lag between the booking and the completion of projects. Secondly, by renewing the longer three year visa for workers, Dubai would signal that it is ready to take on expatriate workers again for the completion of old projects and starting new ones. As things are, Dubai accommodation sector is going downhill, with accommodation in Dubai becoming a buyer’s game. Except for Dubai marina apartment , Dubai condos and Dubai villas- which has seen some consistency or even appreciation in value, in general Dubai flat rent, Dubai Apartments, and Villas in Dubai have depreciated in value over the last few months. A further dip in the market is expected by March-April 2010, after which the market is expected to recover by 2011. But it’s anybody’s guess as to what will really happen, and that is why the Government needs to take steps to see that Dubai is back on track again- the sooner the better. There is too much at stake.

Dubai’s Bachelors are to be Segregated

Dubai’s unprecedented rise in the world of trade and commerce and tourism is largely due to the hardworking expatriate community living there. Up to eighty percent of the city’s population is estimated to be made up by the Europeans, Indians, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans, East Asians and people from many other regions of the whole world. They have been the main cause why Dubai has had unparalleled growth in the world of commerce for the last several decades. This presence of outsiders however, often leads to many social issues taking place and the matter being fiercely debated across various social strata. Among these comes the issue of Dubai’s bachelors who are always over the barrel and under a constant demand for being segregated from the rest of the community. However, not only does it require a herculean effort for accomplishing any such segregation, but it also calls for the basic human rights of the singles being taken into due consideration by the authorities.

As the world knows by now, Dubai is one of the most sought after destinations for the job seekers around its neighbourhood. Many recruiters go as far as the Indian subcontinent and the Far Eastern countries for making fresh recruitment. This involves well paid positions for those who might be ready to spend from six months to several years on instant assignments. Obviously, a large number of these rookies have to travel all alone for attaining livelihoods. They are given accommodation at places that are either outdated or are yet to fully develop. A majority of the adjoining localities may find all such occupations intruding.

Complaints of harassment by the single population have been made from time to time and the issue raised at several fora, so much so that the administration was forced to intervene on many occasions. It’s no secret that despite Dubai’s modern outlook, its Islamic background plays a crucial role in many spheres. There are no orthodox codes for the behaviour of men and women, but the conservatism still looms over large. Nobody likes in this world anyway, their womenfolks being stared and commented upon by the singles next door. Singles on their own part, living away from their homes for months and years, may sometimes fail to understand this basic ingredient of living peacefully, and therefore end up being a headache for their hosts.

Dubai’s administration has made all its efforts to keep bachelor housing as much segregated as possible. However, the issues still refuses to die down amicably. Dubai’s government has recently announced that all bachelors will be segregated from the rest of Emirate’s community, and given separate housing. This may take up to two years to fully accomplish. A recent estimate suggests, out of the total 1,321,453 Dubai’s citizenry, 74.86 per cent or 989,305 fall in the male category, and 25.14 per cent or 332,148 in the female one. This increase of the male population could directly be attributed to the booming construction and economic activities in the Emirate, which requires calling for a significant outside workforce, comprising mainly of the bachelors.

Only time will suggest how successful Dubai’s administration proves out in tackling the singles versus non-singles conundrum. It’s going to be hard time ahead for the bachelors on their own part, as they will have to move out of their present housing areas to the newly built ones. Bachelors are somewhat stranded in Dubai’s environs today, waiting for their fate to be decided by the latest administrative moves.

Dubai Womens Colleges (DWC) celebrated recently amazing 20 years of success which were filled with rapid enrollment growth from 135 to 2200 students, recruitment of highly skilled and dedicated faculty and staff from 25 different countries, and many other highlights and firsts. Without passion DWC would not have focused on the whole person, without the whole person orientation, DWC would not have focused on nutrition and fitness, without the habits of nutrition and fitness, DWC graduates couldnt lead the way in combating heart disease and diabetes. The first 15 graduates in 1992 were pioneers for the nearly 4000 working DWC graduates who have changed the rules for local women in the workforce and raised the standards and expectations for working Emirati women and men.

It’s exactly four months since Dubai sent shockwaves around the world, when one of its biggest companies, Dubai World asked for a delay in repaying its debts. But the firm’s long awaited restructuring plan has kept investors guessing ever since. Rumours that creditors would have to accept a haircut – or less money than they’re owed – and even longer repayment periods – have spooked investors. But this week – the official confirmation they’d been waiting for. As Ben Thompson now reports.

Jobs in Dubai ? Review and List of Dubai?s Headhunters and Jobhunting Resources

During the past month I’ve been contemplating the possibility to work in Dubai and doing a lot of research on the available sites to look for a job, online recruiting agencies and headhunters. At first sight, it might seem easy, there are several sites and many jobs, but when looking more in depth and start reading blogs and reviews, you’ll probably find something different. Some of this sites are scams, they charge you upfront with the promise to “send your CV” to the right people and the key headhunters in Dubai. You pay and …. Guess what … you’re right, they do nothing afterwards. Some others might actually do what they promise, but you can get the exact same level of service from other free and more recognized sites so… Why pay for something that you can get for free??
After a month of research and having used several job websites, here’s my opinion on them.*

Job portals in Dubai that I would NOT recommend

This one I tried it myself. After requiring an upfront fee they literally did nothing at all. I kept logging into the website and the same jobs kept appearing over and over, no new jobs were added on a daily basis. Some of the jobpostings seemed fake to me. I didn’t get a single answer, not even a general or an automated response, from any of the applications I did.

I signed, but didn’t pay and I kept receiving calls and e-mails for weeks. They offer the same service as the other job portals: “Tailor” your CV to UAE standards (costing more than US$ 250) and sending it to key recruiters and headhunters.

Seems exactly the same as the other two described… haven’t tried it but honestly, I wouldn’t run the risk.

Recommended websites to look for a job in Dubai

www.bayt.com
Good portal. Nice layout, updated regularly with real job postings. It’s free (as all should be !) and the matching and search systems work pretty well.
www.monstergulf.com
We all know Monster right so why comment any further. The only thing I could add is that in this case, Monstergulf doesn’t seem to be the market leader, and therefore not to many job postings as in other countries. Websites like Bayt.com seem to have more traffic, more jobs and
www.jobtrackme.com
The website is not so well designed. Looks a bit old and has huge scrolls but when talking about the most important thing, it has it: real and regularly updated job postings.
