The Beginner?s Guide to Dubai Holidays

The United Arab Emirates is a pretty unique destination for holidaymakers and is full of towering cities, beautiful beaches, incredible sand dunes and some of the world’s most luxurious hotels. Dubai is probably the most recognised holiday destination in the UAE and is one of the most remarkable cities you’ll ever visit.

Dubai is full of activities and places to visit and there can be a lot to pack into your stay, but what should you spend your time doing?

For a once in a lifetime experience you really must book yourself on a Dubai desert safari. Nothing beats taking a 4X4 trip across sweeping sand dunes and then a camel trip to a secluded camp to watch the sunset, enjoy an Arabian feast and sleep under the stars. There are many extras, such as belly dancing or fortune telling, to make you experience that little bit more memorable. To help conserve the environment this all takes place at The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, which is just 45km from Dubai city and has been setup for the protection of endangered species and the conservation of the desert habitat. The D.D.C.R is regulated and limited access has been given to certain tour operators to help protect the environment.

While the desert landscape may be amazing, few things in Dubai are as spectacular as the Dubai cityscape. An amazing way to see the city is to take a ride on a Seawings seaplane. This aerial sightseeing tour takes place on a Cessna 208 Caravan amphibian aircraft and will take you over all the popular sights, such as The World Islands, Palm Islands, Jumeirah Beach, Dubailand and more. There are many different options to choose from to suit a range of budgets and needs, including packages that add something extra to your sightseeing, such as dolphin watching, sailing or spa experiences.

For something truly unique you must take a trip to see Ski Dubai – even if you’re not into skiing or snowboarding. In a city where temperatures can reach over 40oC it is quite amazing to step into an indoor ski resort with temperatures that are around -1 oC. If anything, a visit to Ski Dubai is a good excuse to have a cool down. Ski Dubai is 85 metres high and contains five different runs of varying difficulty. There are themed restaurants, shops and a Freestyle Zone so the more adventurous can practice their stunts and tricks.

If after skiing, flying around in a seaplane and exploring the desert you still have money left over perhaps you can afford the cost of staying at an ultra luxurious hotel. The Burj Al Arab, a striking landmark that is located on its own island 300 metres offshore, has garnered an unmatched reputation for opulence. Currently the Burj Al Arab is one of two hotels in the world that lay claim to a seven star rating. The Burj Al Arab has over 200 luxurious suites and a dedicated helicopter transfer service. The hotel is definitely not for those on a budget, but is well worth a stay if you can afford it as there is nothing else like it in the world.

Visiting a souk is one of the main priorities for any visitor to the city. A souk is the name for a traditional market in an Arab city. The Dubai Gold Souk is located in the heart of the city’s commercial business district of Deira and has over 300 retailers dealing in local handmade jewellery and incredible international pieces. It is often said that at anyone time there is over 10 tons of gold in the market. It is definitely a rich cultural experience to visit the market and it can be quite overwhelming for some, so be prepared for a bit of ‘hustle and bustle’.

Dubai holidays offer so much for all types of travellers and there is so much more to this city than these few highlights. Dubai offers a great family friendly holiday or a romantic trip away and there are many memorable experiences to be had that you won’t be able to plan – so just enjoy the ride.

The Marina came about as a project from renowned Dubai developer Emaar, who were the master developer and responsible for the basic construction and infrastructure of the project. The results saw 2 miles of Dubai coastline transformed into one of the worlds largest waterfront projects. Emaar has built some of its own towers at the Dubai Marina, but the bulk of the property here comes from a number of other developers, such as ETA Star, Vakson,Tameer and Damac.

The Marina covers just under 5 million square meters of space on Dubai’s coastline, offering impressive views out into the Arabian Gulf. If it’s a sea view you want, then a large amount of the property here will more than meet your requirements! Very few homes can offer such a spectacular setting, overlooking the sea, boats and yachts that are moored here. Prices may be on the high side for the majority of property based here, but overall they have still not reached the levels seen at projects like Down Town Burj Dubai for example, and that cant boast the sea views that the Marina can(although those on a high floor in the Burj Dubai might like to argue differently!).

Just off Sheikh Zayed Road, the Marina provides easy access to central Dubai and to the surrounding commercial districts such as the Dubai Media and Internet Cities, as well as the Jebel Ali freezone. And there is also the Mall of Emirates and over a dozen 5 star hotels all within short distance, meaning the Dubai Marina is ideally situated for both work and play! As freehold residential property goes, you would be well pressed to find a better place to call home.

Although Dubai is the most widely recognised Emirate in the UAE, the capital, Abu Dhabi, is a popular place for residents and visitors.  The city of Abu Dhabi is only an hour away from Dubai, so it is a convenient place to live for many commuters, given the higher costs of living in Dubai.  Abu Dhabi is a cosmopolitan city, and it currently growing at a massive rate following on from Dubai’s lead, meaning there is also a movement towards freehold property for expatriates.

Not all the upcoming Abu Dhabi property will be available to expatriates, as the nationals of the Emirates are being widely encouraged to buy them as well.  This is a good option as it prevents the community from being separated, and many nationals are actually choosing the option to purchase on freehold developments.  Although the projects underway in Abu Dhabi are less popular than the properties in Dubai, the freehold market is much newer, and the Abu Dhabi government have been a lot slower to push for more freehold property development.  With more and more demand for property that is affordable, Abu Dhabi is going to continue to grow.

Called the Nakheel Habour & Tower it consists of four separate vertical strands arranged around a central void with numerous skybridges at various points connecting them together.

The upper floors give way to a curving exoskeleton which forms the pinnacle of the building like the nib of a pen, and which if the rumours are to be believed, will reach 1,140 metres in height with more than 200 floors underneath.

The scale of the building services alone are mind boggling with in excess of 150 lifts having to be installed to carry the building population that will number tens of thousands, a massive task for even the most skill of service engineers to balance out.

Using the tallest elevators today that travel at 16.85 metres a second it could take more than a minute to reach the top of the building and that’s without taking into account the difference in pressure over greater and greater altitudes that need to be stabilised for passenger comfort.

Elevators have been one of the main limiters on just how tall we can build – few people wish to spend minutes stuck in a small lift whilst occupiers like efficient journey times. How this is overcome to provide vertical transport journey times similar to what we enjoy in shorter buildings will see the technology pushed to new extremes.

To put this extreme height into context, if you built the Nakheel Habour & Tower from the bottom of the deepest part of the North Sea it would have over 300 metres of it sticking above sea level.

Like the Burj Dubai and many other record-breaking skyscrapers before it, the actual finished height is top secret with the developer worried someone else will arrive along and steal their thunder in the meantime. Nakheel are only willing to confirm the project is more than 1,000 metres high.

In addition to the main tower, there will be a huge marina inspired by the ancient harbour of Alexandria and over 90 other towers of varying height that will take over a decade to all be completed and throughout this week we’ll look at the other towers of a similar class that are also being launched in Dubai right now – the 850 metre tall One Dubai, the 700 metre tall Anara, 600 metre tall One Park Avenue and 550 metre tall Meraas Tower.

This isn’t a pie in the sky idea. Nakeel has set up a sales office and work has already begun on site with the state-owned developer flush with cash and eager to beat their main rivals, Burj Dubai developer Emaar at their own game in getting the world’s tallest building on their books.
