The Middle East’s boomtown is built about the backs of exploited foreign workers. This is pretty interesting but sounds a bit like Brigadoon. I’ve driven round most of the desert among Dubai and Sharjah and in no way observed it.
Most people are conscious but select to disregard it, or come up with the argument that they select to come here, they’re better off than they will be at home, supply and demand, their personal individuals do not treat them any much better anyway and so on.
When the winter was colder I organised a blanket drive, managed to get sufficient money to purchase 60 brand new fleecy blankets which I think went as much as Sonapur. Exactly, it’s not quite the dirty little secret. these sort of practices happen everywhere around the world and not only Dubai. Im thinking of the native americans who are gathered up and thrown into reserves where most if not all of them live below the poverty line. Now im not trying to open up another front but Dubai and the UAE in general are trying to make amends are trying to be more aware of human rights violation. give them time and they’ll get there. same for qatar and bahrain.

any1 who actually has lived there knows it isnt quite a ‘dirty little secret’. You always see immigrant workers working ridiculous hours (it pisses me off cos im part indian) but the fact is they get payed better in dubai then back home.

Yet, they practice the same slavery as the construction companies, confiscate passports, no payment on due date, 14 hours work, pay ransom if you want your freedom back. These are facts, just like the handful of Indians who made money there out of the millions working on pennies.

Dude, first of all i’m not emirati. second of all if your filipino friend got fucked in the ass that’s his problem. He was unlucky that’s all. go to Dubai and you will notice that there are alot and i mean alot of filipinos, indian pakistanis who are really rich, who have made it in life. It’s not my problem if most of the migrants who come here don’t speak a word of english and have a little or no working skills. theyre paid for what they do

Ah, forgot to tell you, his promised salary was 1200 dirham a month, they worked 3 weeks in February after arrival, no money was given. “End of March all payment will be paid” – they were told. So if he wants to fulfill the requirements for his freedom, he has to work for a year (to pay the ransom and for return ticket) – providing he will be paid…. Which so far has not happened yet.

For fact, passports of ALL “employees” will be taken upon arrival in Dubai and they never see it back again. My Filipino friend just got to the famous Atlantis hotel, posh French resto called ROTANG, he was promised supervisor job. Instead he has to work as slave, waiter, cleaner and what not, 14 hours. Passport taken away, no return ticket, pay is half of what promised and if he wants to quit within 2 years, must pay 5000 dirham for his freedom (and buy return ticket on the top of that).

I hate how people seem to understand squat about Dubai! it was built in 60 years, it’s only normal it doesnt have any antique buildings or landmarks. its still a newborn country if one may put it.but its making great strides where no arab nation has ever made. i live in abu dhabi and i particularly love it, its safe, well managed,and theres a lot of money to be made.

And I also don’t know why people are making it seem like Dubai is some amazing paradise… my guy is from Dubai and when we go there, it’s pretty normal =/ I mean, HIS family in particular is wealthy, but the area itself is really nothing special, no different than any other tourist fueled vacation oriented location [people forget there are also MANY of those same areas in the USA by the way] -_- Also… the Burj is HOT, it’s my fav hotel so far, but why is the CEO at 1:39 a white guy???
